Make a Farmhouse Window... With No Fancy Miter Cuts in Sight!

When I was recently challenged to redo my bathroom, I halted at the window. But only for a moment. This was my chance to give it a brand new life with a look that I adored. Digging back to my childhood roots of growing up in a rambling old farmhouse, that look was recreated. I located a historical online tutorial that hinted how they once upon a time layered standard boards without making any miter cuts. Well now, THAT was easy to replicate! The end result is my own twist of a farmhouse window. With... you got it. Not one fancy dancy miter cut nor expensive fancy piece of moulding to be seen. This window ended up being much more than just a pretty frame. It serves as a memory of times past, when my mom use to water her indoor plants in front of her windows with cooled down tea left over from dinner. Now THAT is a window with a great view! Think you could do this? Here's how mine was done...

Meet my version of a farmhouse window! This was created with standard wood you can purchase from any hardware store.

First, I stripped the standard moulding off the window. Nothing else was removed.

I drew out what I desired the window to look like, then cut down the pieces to fit, and installed them with a nail gun. The window sill was slipped into place first right on top of the old sill, then the rest layered around it.

Once the wood was all in place, it was then primed, joins caulked, then finished off with a semi gloss paint. The miter bars inside the window are pieces of vinyl stuck to the glass. ALL the details are included in the original blog link at the bottom of this post.

The window made such a huge statement in the room, that I deemed the entire look 'salvaged farmhouse.' :) Visit all the details at the blog link below.

I can’t wait to try this. Also love the idea about industrial strength Velcro. Does the wood sit close enough to the mirror?
