Country Pine Commode-Before & After

Another day, another DIY project done! This is an old commode Coach and I picked up at auction last fall for $25. Unfortunately, it was buried in the back of the barn until our most recent barn sale (which was quite a success, I must say). My mom had been searching for a nice storage cupboard for her entryway, and I knew this would be the perfect piece once I rescued it from under the piles of books and bric-a-brac!
Combining new and old pieces creates an interesting focal point for the entry way. Antique ladder back chairs and art work flank the re-furbished commode. To read the rest of the DIY story, please visit my blog @ http://countrydesignhome.com/2014/05/02/country-pine-commode-transformed/
This is the before. Simple pine commode with one drawer and two doors that hide generous storage inside. The piece needed a little TLC, but was otherwise in good shape.
This is the after. A few coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and finished with a new Crème Wax Finish from DecoArts. This product is amazing! You apply it with a brush, just as you would any other varnish, allow to dry, then buff it to achieve that old waxed look and feel. It is odorless, simple to use and goes a very long way!
The finish is in the staging details. The refurbished commode is simple and clean with little embellishment. The trick to creating a focal point with the simplest pieces is in the staging. Everything on this table, except the seashells, was purchased at HomeGoods (all at different times), but together they create a charming blue and silver vignette that catches your eye when you enter the space.
