Glamming It Up
I did a cabinet in pink a few short weeks ago if you remember, well this sideboard was part of the set that was broken up and sold. I purchased the cabinet and the sideboard. They are beautiful pieces in their own right but honestly I thought the colour of the finish was just not doing them justice. I thought I needed to kick it up a notch or two.
I liked the result I got from using FAT Paint ™ colours Raven and Cast Iron together on a vanity. This I figured would be an excellent project to pair the two colours together again. Although the surface is fairly glossy I only needed to clean it with vinegar and water. When working with FAT Paint there usually is no need to sand the surface of your piece in order for the paint to adhere.
Once the sideboard was prepared for painting I started with covering the entire exterior with two coats of Raven and the interior with Cast Iron. I then had to decide what features I was going to enhance with Cast Iron. I kept with just the more prominent features and the middle portion of the legs. I kept the very bottom of the legs Raven in order to keep the unit grounded.
I chose to leave the original green felt liners in the two small drawers but would be painting the sides and the large drawer. In order to avoid getting paint all over the felt I used a 4" metal spatula to press up against the edge where I was paint to cover the felt and moved it along as I painted. I also taped the edge of the spatula to cover the sharp corner and edge. Taping it also makes for easy clean up you just pull the tape off and throw it out.
In order to paint the Cast Iron on the details of the sideboard I used a small artist brush on the smaller details and a 1 1/2" brush on the legs. If your hand shakes while painting areas like this try to ensure your hand or arm can rest on something as you paint. This helps considerably in steadying your hand allowing for clean smooth edges.
One of the last things I did was gild the handles. When I was painting the sideboard with Raven I also painted the handles I had removed. Once the drawers and doors were waxed with the clear wax and dried I got out my little pot of gilding wax and a small stiff bristle artist brush to apply the silver wax. It can be buffed after twelve hours.

This is beautiful. My grandparents owned a similar piece that my mother painted white about 25 years ago--unfortunately, that was well before the days of all the products that make them look so nice like this one does. She ended up giving it away because she didn't want it anymore and I didn't want it either. Wish I had it now that it could be updated so beautifully!
