Growing Foods From the Dirty Dozen List

When choosing what to grow there are different approaches to it. In the past we mostly grew what grows well here and we have had success with it. With limited space and possibilities only a few of us can grow everything we eat.
One of the reasons we grow our own food is because we want better quality, locally and organically grown food. Foods that are not contaminated by pesticides. Environmental Working Group tells us that there is a difference, not all foods are contaminated alike. You may or may not have heard of The Dirty Dozen. Those are foods that have been contaminated the most.
That does not mean that all other foods are grown pesticide free. These are the 12 of 50 most contaminated once.
The Dirty Dozen + Foods (in order of contamination)

1 Apples

2 Strawberries

3 Grapes

4 Celery

5 Peaches

6 Spinach

7 Sweet bell peppers

8 Nectarines (imported)

9 Cucumbers

10 Cherry tomatoes

11 Snap peas (imported)

12 Potatoes

+ hot peppers and leafy greens – kale and collard greens

12 of them can be grown here! Blueberries, salad, plums, and cherries, are next on the list. Again, all can be grown here. Carrots, green beans, squash, raspberries, and broccoli are quite high on the list, too. All kinds of greens and peas and beans as well as potatoes, root vegetables, and squash do well in the garden. With the help of a greenhouse we can grow bell peppers and tomatoes. We struggle more with fruit and berries, some do better than others. We can not grow peaches or nectarines.
