    Show us a picture! You could always use wood to beef up the mantle and then paint it semigloss white or whitewash the red brick if you don't like it.

    I had awful purplish/red brick. I took regular premixed plaster out of the box and plastered over the brick several times until the lines don't show. I sanded several times, primed and painted mine an off white. Under $20 and I love the look. My mantle looked much better afterwards and I left mine as is.

    If you don't like the red brick, you could paint it or put a thin stone veneer over the top. There are some really beautiful options out there that are easy to apply and completely transform the appearance (and decade) of the fireplace.
