Louis, maybe you could do something like I did to a similar cabinet. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-3007335

Becky, I was about to suggest getting it up off the floor before painting. I would also change out the hardware for something with more 'curb appeal'.

@Lori, I was surprised how much difference that alone made.

Paint is always the easiest and cheapest way to make a big change. Yes you can paint laminate, you just need to paint it with a non porous primer like killz then you may need to sand as kills tends to get brush marks. Then faux finish or paint. However to soften the cabinet and really make it useful I would attach a long wardrobe mirror on one set of doors depending on width and length you may need to attach to Luan and create a border with molding to hide the routed out areas. On the other side cut two Luan panels and a some cotton batting a fabric to would coordinate in your room cover the Luan panels and attach to the front of the cabinet and you will have softened the overall look and now have a place to take a final look before leaving the house.

I unfortunately don't have pictures of it, but I had that exact same cabinet for a closet when I was living in my parents' bonus room during college. I found some butterfly contact paper that matched the colors and theme of my bedroom and spruced it up that way. This is the basic idea of what I did: http://muchpics.com/use-beautiful-wallpaper-to-cover-the-front-of-an-old-filing-cabinet-wonderful/

I would paint it then either paint inside the panels another color or just highlight the panel surrounds another color or after you paint, wallpaper inside the panel and definitely change the pulls.
