Pesty Weeds Everywhere

My two worst offenders are dandelions (too many to dig out even if I were able) and the other one is Goat Heads (we called them sand burs when I was growing up). Any suggestions on how to best rid my yard of both?

The best defense against weeds is a healthy lawn. Weeds are opportunistic, so the thicker your lawn is, the less chance they have. Both dandelions and goathead, also known as puncturevine, spread by seeds, so it's important to get them before they form them. It's too late for this season, but your best bet is a pre-emergent herbicide applied in early spring. At this point in the season, if you cannot pull them, you would have to rely on a post-emergent herbicide. Make sure to check the label to make sure it is safe for the type of grass you have. If you are interested in biological controls, there are two weevils that are effective against goathead. Hi Karen! How timely! We just wrote a blog about natural weed killers! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/the-truth-about-natural-weed-killer-exposed-3642830 My favorite (& more environmentally friendly) option was boiling water or water weeder (blaster). Best of luck!
