Every year he starts out great but never blooms eventually my lilies and other plants crowd him out. So what is it? Dahlia?

  • I believe it is a peony. There are 2 issues: it does not like to be crowded and it may be planted too deep. so you may want to transplant it to a sunny location away from others and only put the tuber about an inch or so in the ground. keep watered and next year you should have blooms. Nothing this year unless you get really lucky. Peonies need space and for many varieties about 3 foot should do. happy gardening!

I agree with being a Peony planted too deep. It might like some mulching too.

Omg.. cant believe I missed that! Seeing it alone every year it never occurred to me. It must've been part of the mess we pulled out when we bought the house 4 years ago. Im not fond of peonies but to funny I was just thinking maybe I would take some of the 100yr old ones from the family farm that my mother always says I should. Anyway I already moved it near my weeping cherry not much at all in the area. Thanks!

Yup, I too agree. I am no gardener but I have two large patches of Peonys that seem to thrive in my yard . They look the same.

That's a peony, I have several....and its planted too low that's why it's not blooming. The top of the tuber needs to be planted no lower then 2 inches from the top of soil. After they bloom you can cut the whole thing down to the ground to see the rest of the plants and next year it will get bigger and better....

Will I have several Peony plants around the base of my birch tree and still am learning about the plant. Thanks for the posting! I do know the ants love them so do not plant near the house or garage. I keep trimming them back every fall so I am the only wacky one that lives here! The neighbor loves them and she picks them for the village office and the peonies do have a wonderful sweet smell probably why the ants love them!

Can you bring the peony to me??? I love them but funny you call them a mess haha I would love a mess of peonies, but as others mentioned it is planted too deeply--been there done that myself

Also I forgot to mention the ants. Ants always crawl on the buds and plant when they get ready to bloom. Something about helping it bloom. They actually help. I was spraying mine by mistake. Before you take the blooms inside just dunk them in a bucket of water.
