What color should I paint my kitchen island?

Karen Stutts
by Karen Stutts
I recently posted here about my faux tile handpainted backsplash in my kitchen, but now I need some advice from you great hometalk experts. I upgraded my kitchen island by putting trim and decorative touches under the countertop and around the bottom. You can only see a corner of it in this photo, but the counter top of the island is dark green (almost teal) and the bottom cabinet is white. I'd like to highlight it a little more and I thought maybe I could paint it a different color than white. I thought about black or charcoal but that wouldn't work with the green counter top. Any suggestions? Or should I just leave it white?

I vote for white as well! But if your heart is set on changing the color, how about the grey color you used behind the Family sign

You have the countertops that I hated when I moved into my house almost 20 years ago! Do you like the color? I was able to offset the striking color by using a color for the walls etc that I can see in your pretty middle tile backsplash you painted... but I ended up using a lot of it and it softened the white and brought the dark green back into not so much contrast. But you might love it? This is about the color I used http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/jackandthebeanstalk PS Now my kitchen is all white with beadboard cabinets and a nice warm granite countertop and not a hint of green anywhere! oh and what is worse was the floor was that dark green and white and BLACK line...very graphic where I am more cottage-ish

@Tanya Peterson Felsheim I have dark green countertops and floor in my townhouse kitchen also. I am a blue and white person. Green is the last color I would ever use anywhere in my house. In the study, we have a malachite trimmed fireplace and that is the color basically of the floor. I would appreciate anymore ideas since this is a second home and we aren't going to do anything major yet.

I understand you wanting too set it off and by the way I like your counter-tops. lol Have you thought of just doing a small amount of something? Like a stenciling or a row of the same faux tile around just under the counter? This would also tie it in with the rest of your cabinets.

I'm gonna take some heat for this but my overall favorite neutral durable material is Chopping block countertop. Done. It goes with anything basically and is timeless. Oh well! And they make some nice laminates that you can apply yourself.

Not black in kitchen with white and this color value of green. I still go with chopping block. It's durable and timeless.

Chopping block is an excellent idea. A natural color that goes with anything

I adore a white kitchen. Nothing says farm house to me more than white cabinets. I have quartz counter tops and they are wonderful no care. I wouldn't have anything else. If I had to make do until I had the money put by I would. Nothing quite like them and they come in many colors!

Lately I've been looking at that pale green that we used to see in the 40s. I'm toying with painting my cabinets with that. I love color in a kitchen....it says "come on in". Happy painting!

I would leave it as is and just change the backsplash and do black hardware, something a little different then what is there now. Maybe do a bamboo curtain.

Something to consider - if your island has cabinet doors, consider having glass installed in some/all of the doors. A good wood worker can do it inexpensively. They cut out the panel, mount glass and then can add mullions/muntins as desired. A fun look might be to create a stainglass look using peel-off lead separator tape. You can find it in craft stores. Draw your pattern on the opposite side in a grease pencil, apply your tape, then wash the pencil markings off. To give it even that extra umph, add an interior light under the counter proper to highlight your display items. A battery operated light works great for this kind of application if you don't want to wire anything.

Karen, with your counters and top trip so dark, I would leave the cabinets white but would use some decorative or black hardware to make the cabinets POP! A few glass inserts suggestion I LOVE also.

I love your kitchen, just as it is. I wouldn't go into any more color. . that green is my favorite color, and way back when I was learning how to use colors, I was told not to use more than 3 items in any one color, white is the perfect color to bring out your green, it was the first thing I noticed in your pictures.

I'm not sure who many walls yo have to paint, but I would leave the cabinets white. I think anything you would do would just compete with the green countertops. BUT, I would lose that spindly rail on top of the cabinets. It makes them look cheap and they're not. If the only wall space you are talking about is above the cabinets I would consider wallpaper. Lose the blue. It does;t go with the countertops. Maybe use a foliage kind of pattern to tie in the countertops. THEN get some viney plants to put on top of the cabinets. LOTS of the,. Philodendron can grow anywhere. If that is not actually a tile backsplash I would consider wallpapering that as well. Leave the hardware. It looks like brushed nickel and that is nice. Maybe even check into some sort of metal for the backsplash that would tie in the cabinet pulls. They make all kinds of east to install backsplash panels now. LOL. Lose the valance and get something that coordinates with the new wallpaper. The blue isn't working no matter how much you like blue. LOL. Okay, I guess I'm finished. Did you need me to come over!?

Leave it white. If top is dark green
