Faux braided rug

How could I make a more believable outdoor faux braided rug. I've got the part about measuring the oval for the the correct pattern. How do I make it look like more than a rg with an oval striped rug?

I presume you are painting this. I looked at some pictures of rugs and maybe this will help. Paint your different colored oval strips, then go back and add contrasting colored X 's over each row. Here's a picture of a rug that I got the idea from. Click to enlarge to see what I am talking about.

Even using easy to use brown sharpie would be easy to find also!
