Shade Plants for Problem Landscape

Last week I shared How to Install a Stone Walkway with you! The area between the front sidewalk and street was a real eye sore with the kids walking across the grass and the huge trees that shade the area, making it really difficult to maintain the grass.
So we dug out all the grass, put the walkway in and made landscape beds around the trees.
Here are the plants that we used to create color and texture to the landscaping.
Planting under and around trees can be difficult because of the shade. We found some great plants that will work really well.
This is where we started. The walkway is in, and the landscape beds are marked with white paint.
Different colors and textures are great to use in landscaping.
Hostas are the most well known shade loving plant. But did you know there are 1000's of different Hosta plants available.
These are Sedges – While not normally the first plant to add to a shade garden it works well if you have the right conditions. It likes wetter soil and should be placed where you get the longest amount of daylight. It is especially well suited for areas that get midday sun. Our choice for this project was Carex Evergold.
Corkscrew Rush – Grasses are the one species that are the least suited to be planted in shade, and while rush is not a grass it can work in your landscape to provide the texture and appearance of grass. There are very few choices of Rush that get much taller than 12 inches so when I was able to find this Big Twister variety I knew it was destine for our landscape.
And because I just love vintage, old and rusty. I added a fun lawn ornament. This little tricycle came from my Father-in-laws barn. You can read about the others plants we used, on the blog.

Morning glories, love shady areas. And after the flower fade into a paper thin ball it's fill with loads of small seeds. So that one pack of seed, will give back so , so many more
