Can you paint the metal railing from the 70's and if so with what?

Metal railing on front porch needs a face lift.

  • After a good scraping and sanding and wire brushing of the metal removing any loose chips and rust you need to prime the steel with a good quality exterior primer. Rustoleum brand paint appears to be the leader. While it might appear to be easer to spray the paint on, a small two inch or inch and half brush works best. Spraying wastes a lot of paint when doing a project such as this. Once primed pick a color that you like and paint again.

As a professional painter I used to have to do that quite often. Sand the metal down and make sure it is smooth and free of any chips. You don't have to prime the metal. Just use a good exterior spray paint that is made for metal. Keep it even and smooth and one or two coats later and you will have a great looking railing.

well I would have given the same advice as the two before me did except if it is not a whole lot of it I used to take mine down and set it on cardboard, spray paint all the bottom and then turn it over and do all the top and spindles' worked great for me. Good luck
