Sticky front door

the inside of the front door in the house we just purchased is sticky/tacky. It is a metal door, painted white w/a half round window on top. The door has a sticky/tacky feel to it, as if someone has put some sort of sticky material (like Glad Cling Wrap) and the sticky residue remained. How do I go about removing this sticky/tacky feel without having to use TONS of Goo Gone? I tried it on a small area and it helped, but took LOTS of elbow grease to do this small area (6"x 6"). I'm frustrated by the dirty hand prints that it leaves and I can't get them off.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Sincerely,
Kris

  • Sounds as though the paint failed to properly dry out. Low VOC paints and those that have primer included in the mix tend to be moisture sensitive. Higher then normal humidity levels when paint is applied can prevent the paint from drying properly. Higher gloss finishes also are suspect as the key to the shiny gloss is slower drying times to allow the finish to float out smooth. There are basically two methods to fix. Take a hair dryer and warm up the finish. Not to close as you may blister the finish. Get it really warm for several min and see once cool that the tackiness has gone away. If not the only other method is to strip the door of the paint and start again.

If that doesn't work use Awesome from the Dollar Tree store or 409! It takes off paint and stain! I would recommend taking it outside to do this in the fresh air and to protect other surfaces! Another safer natural remedy is Orange paint remover(made from oranges)=reusable can use your hands =can be reused =safe to use with no fumes! I used it to strip an antique oak crank phone and it was a joy to work with!

I don't know when this door was painted. I have lived in the house for almost 4 years. I live in a very dry climate and so not certain that the paint is the problem. Though I may try the hair dryer to see if somehow that will work Thanks,
