Miniature Zinc Pails & Barn Wood Planter Tutorial

Don't you love the look of reclaimed wood and anything galvanized? I do. I use galvanized pails as planters all the time in my junk garden. This project uses five mismatched zinc pails/pots and a 30" long board, and it's super easy!

Hen and chicks (Sempervivum) work very well in these miniature pails.

Be sure to add a drainage hole in each pot. A nail and hammer will work.

I have a little secret to keeping the pots in place on the board so the pails can't slide off if bumped or blown. Full details and measurements on my blog!

Please advise me on the soil to use with hens and chicks.... Can they remain outdoors in winter in Georgia?

I use regular potting soil. Hen and chicks are very hardy. I take mine out of the pots in the fall, and plant them in the garden to overwinter here in Minnesota.

I bought some ole galvanized buckets, i always love the looks of them as planters. Came on HT to see about drainage in them. Thanks for sharing. These look so cute. Love it.
