WHAT COLOR TO PAINT??

DIY Fun Ideas
by DIY Fun Ideas
I just finished doing this faux silver leafing technique of these doors using metallic paint (details here: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/windows-doors/doors/get-an-amazing-faux-silver-leaf-finish-with-just-paint-3707253). I now need to paint the rest of the room but I have no idea what color will complement those doors. Any suggestions?

    A muted purple
  • Margo Fogg Margo Fogg on May 17, 2014
    some kind of Turquoise
  • Margo Fogg Margo Fogg on May 17, 2014
There are so many shades and tints of turquoise (or what I would call turquoise) that you could use. You could also try painting just 1 wall in turquoise...an accent wall and decide where to go from there.
  • Rita Holloway Rita Holloway on May 17, 2014
If you go with a shade of turquoise. You could accent with some red items
  • Deep Believer Deep Believer on May 17, 2014
a dark turquoise/teal. I have silver walls and bold teal closet doors and all the trim done in the same tealshade in my Master bedroom and it looks stunning..I will have to post some pics sometime.
  • I agree with others' suggestions. Consider Pantone's "Color of the year" - Radiant Orchid. See color here https://www.pantone.com/pages/index.aspx?pg=21131

@MarketReady Home Staging & ReDesign Thank you for the advice. I did take a look at the Pantone Radiant Orchid, but then went with another Pantone color. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! Here is the final color: http://diyfunideas.com/?p=6109

luv luv luv it!! I just did silver white and grey in my kitchen and it came out very nice so I would think if it was mine I would go light grey if you want something bolder pick something darker from the cool color family...love to see the end results!
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on May 18, 2014
I noticed the color of your furniture...I would paint a beautiful dove grey, particularly if this is a bedroom. For curtains, I would get some drop clothes, tape off 2 stripes about 3" wide across the bottom about 10" off the floor and about 10" from the top and paint the stripes in a FLAT SILVER spray paint! It would be striking! Then coordinate in blacks/greys/whites with a touch of red...perhaps throw pillows or a throw at the foot of the bed...a white vase with poppies!
  • Nancy InTn Nancy InTn on May 18, 2014
Some shade of teal/turquoise depending on if you want a light or darker room.
  • Marion Nesbitt Marion Nesbitt on May 18, 2014
Might go grey on walls. If this is a bedroom, turquoise walls might not be too restful. You can always use turquoise for bedding, accents. Maybe one more colour besides turquoise for accents - deep red/turquoise in a Middle Eastern type area rug. I think drop cloths might not be elegant enough for classy silver doors but I like stripe idea Jeanette S has .
  • Angelia Christenson Angelia Christenson on May 19, 2014
I agree with Marion....Greys and gray blues will go really well and then you can add splashes of accent colors in throw pillows or your bedding items like a deep red. Really depends on who will be sleeping in this room i guess unless its your guest room in which case its ALL UP TO YOU!!! I have Sea GULL on my living room walls from Behr Premium Paints which is a tad dark for most but instead of doing white ceilings i went with just a slight blue tinge of "silver bells" also by BEHR which really helps blend it all together and makes the super white crown molding and mantle and fireplace look white white all the time. I used to be an interior contractor and always loved to listen to my customers color choices and plans before we began our work. You can tell a lot by a person by the colors they choose for their home.

Have to agree with Jeanette and Marion. Dove grey walls with turquoise as accents. I love turquoise, it is one of my favorite colors, but would find an entire room over powering. With grey walls and turquoise accents, the room would be like a beautiful piece of silver/turquoise jewelry.
  • Bonnie S Bonnie S on May 19, 2014
I also agree...a light gray would be beautiful and very elegant. Bright colors here are too bold...especially if it is a smaller room...will make the room look smaller and dark
  • Leah M Leah M on May 19, 2014
    A cool light blue
  • Karen Karen on May 19, 2014
Which ever wall color you choose i'd use some black as an accent, it goes with everything and will look good with the silver. Gray Walls, and a yellow and black accent is gorgeous
  • Tuzwoo Tuzwoo on May 19, 2014
cobalt blue would go great with silver.if that is too bold for you perhaps a paler shade of blue with cobalt blue trim. .or a medium shade of gray with the cobalt blue trim.
  • Tuzwoo Tuzwoo on May 19, 2014
red would also go well with the silver
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@Tuzwoo Thank you for the suggestions. The blue sounds good. I'm leaning toward a teal-ish blue. Red might be a little to bright for the room. :-)
  • Buster Evans Buster Evans on May 19, 2014
I would go either with Red maybe leaning toward maroon side or blue not quite navy just a couple of shades lighter.. I think it would accent the silver and make it stand out as well.A this depending on how much light comes into the room.
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@Buster Evans Thanks for the suggestion Buster. I think I'm leaning toward the blue right now.
  • Jean Ouellette Jean Ouellette on May 19, 2014
I would go with a shade of blue/gray color... the doors look great!
  • Jim Lambert Jim Lambert on May 19, 2014
I'd go with a deep chocolate brown with white trim
  • Andrea R Andrea R on May 19, 2014
something in tones of seaglass ,ocean like colors
  • Barbara Turner Barbara Turner on May 19, 2014
Go pick out a pretty pattern of contact paper and just use that. They have all kinds of patterns and it's super easy. Just go slow and smooth it out! I did the same thing for the backsplash in our redone kitchen. It looks like faux suede!
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@Barbara Turner That's a really interesting idea. I think I do want paint, though, in this room. But I just may use this idea for another project I have in mind!
  • Donna H Donna H on May 19, 2014
I like the idea of turquoise walls around the doors. The faux finish would really pop. Then do the rest of the room in a medium charcoal grey.
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@Donna H I just tried the turquoise last night. It was a little too much. I'm going to pick up another paint sample (toned down to more of a teal) today and see how that goes. Yes, the other walls will be more muted too.
  • Donna Snyder Donna Snyder on May 19, 2014
    Valspar smoked oyster white trim
  • LaWanna Lampert LaWanna Lampert on May 19, 2014
I appreciate your bold choice for the doors, just lovely. My suggestion for the walls would be a mid tone green (Kelly?) (no army green) or blue green or a shade of purple(not too dark). Nothing light or in the gray family, too monochromatic. No red unless you are going for the Chinese restaurant look. :) Trim could be in the same color as the walls (no black, it will fight for dominance with the doors.) A mid tone will also blend with your floor color. My field is interior design. Hope this is helpful.
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@LaWanna Lampert Definitely helps. Thank you. I'm leaning in the blue-green family. Picked up a paint sample yesterday. Close but not quite there. Will pick up another today to try out. :-)
  • Wendy Johnson Wendy Johnson on May 19, 2014
Not a clue-I am like yes red, yes turquoise, yes gray! But I know I want to see the results because your doors are fantastic!
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@Wendy Johnson You are hysterical! Will definitely post the final pictures when done.
  • Pam Bolton Pam Bolton on May 19, 2014
I would let the doors be the stars in this room and keep the walls and ceiling soft. BM Palladian Blue thewalls and at 50% on the ceiling. Please let us know what you decide.
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@Pam Bolton someone else suggested this color too. I just took a look at it. It might be a little light. I am leaning in that color family. So thinking of darker around the doors, but then a lighter shade like that on the rest of the walls. We'll see. Thank you for the suggestion.
  • Peggy Peggy on May 19, 2014
I just went to a model home today that had an accent wall that looked almost the same as your doors and the other walls were painted a light turquoise and it was beautiful!
  • Robin Peterson Robin Peterson on May 19, 2014
I would use a light violet/lavender. It would give you a calming, sophisticated feel - Nice for the Bedroom and would go with your glass knobs and carved jewelery hanger - very glam!!n ooh la la

@Andrea R @Robin Peterson Violet/lavender sound interesting. I tried turquoise last night and it was a little too much. Maybe I'll pick these up today and give them a shot. Thanks for the suggestions!!!
  • Lisa Schneider Lisa Schneider on May 20, 2014
I would paint it a light gray and accent with brighter colored accessories like red , yellow ,orange.
    • DIY Fun Ideas DIY Fun Ideas on May 21, 2014
@Lisa Schneider Thank you for the suggestion Lisa. I've actually thought about grey. I painted the living room grey and LOVE it. But with the silver doors, I'm afraid that I'll lose their effect with a grey. I think I'm going to try going with more color here. (that's kind of scary for me)
  • Heather Coale Heather Coale on May 21, 2014
Seafoam green would go very well with this. With the soft wall color, the doors would pop. Green is soothing without becoming overshadowed by the silver.

ok cool .. ultimately its your room and your decision.. there are TONS of Possibilities
  • Pam Bolton Pam Bolton on May 21, 2014
Another suggestion in the blue family would be BM West Coast CC-750. This is a darker blue with more of a grey base. My favorite dark blue is BM Hale Navy for your accent wall and BM Revere Pewter for the other walls with 50% Revere Pewter on the ceiling.
  • Robin Seefahrt Robin Seefahrt on May 21, 2014
taupe or blue grey. I think I would of played with some colors 1'st before doing the doors.
  • Sheila D Sheila D on May 24, 2014
Soft teal-have sample paints mixed to try first...
  • Lynn Lawson Lynn Lawson on May 25, 2014
Soft teal would be my choice as well. It would play upon the silver and give it a nice glow.
  • Peggy Peggy on Jun 03, 2014
I saw the reveal. It looks just like the model I saw. Beautiful!
