Fleur Chalk Paint Dresser

When I saw this dresser I wasn't sure if I should buy it. The stain was cherry and the varnish was very thick. I knew there was going to be some kind of issue, but couldn't resist the lovely details...
Here is the before:
There was lots of cherry stain and a thick varnish coating the entire piece.
Close up of how the top was looking.
To create this look, I sanded the top and stained it with Minwax Special Walnut.
I painted the body in Duck Egg Blue and Old White Chalk Paint®. For the beautiful brocade, I used a Royal Design Studio stencil.
The bone pulls are from Hobby Lobby. I'm so glad I decided to pick her up. She's one of my favorites. Full details on the makeover and steps are on my blog post.

Did you apply the chalk paint over the varnish ? Or did you have to sand or strip it? Thanks. It's lovely.
