My patio does not seem to be level. When it rains, water from the yard

I have a large concrete patio that must not be level. When it rains, the water puddles in one outside corner and builds up. I cannot wash/rinse off the area, or even pressure wash successfully because of the dirt and mud that wash onto the patio. What can I do to make it pretty and be able to plant around the patio without all the dirt and mulch washing into the patio/concrete.

  • I suggest to put in edging around the patio. Plastic edging easiest to do and it will help hold back the mess. Home depot has contractor grade which is about 5" and about $35 for 40feet I think. Hope this helps for ideas

@The Garden Frog with C Renee Thank you for your idea. This would work well to keep yard water that was leaking/backing up on the patio from the yard, but water is pooling on part of the patio that is not coming in from the yard. If I could get the water that just wants to sit on the patio, and doesn't drain off, to drain into the yard, the edging would be great. I've been wondering if I need to dig around the patio to make the ground there lower than the concrete. Thank you so much for your thoughts and time.

@@ Melinda Edwards You can do as I had to! Everytime it rained water would pond up in front of a under house breathing vent, that would eventually start to flow under my home. Finally this year I purchased a halfmoon steel guard attached it to two 2 x 4's dug out the area to set in deep and poured 3 bags of cement sealing the vent completely with a down grade to prevent anything like this from happening again. To level your patio ya will need to level the ground, if the ground washes away then I would suggest building a retainer wall of cement.. Let me know how this works out!

@Sherry I'm not sure that I quite understand what you are telling me to do. My house sits on a slab so there is no place for water to go. I'm wondering if the ground around the patio needs to be dug out and lowered by a few inches. But then, one section of the outside corner will still puddle and not run off. Makes me think the concrete has a dip towards the middle that holds the water on the patio. This is probably beyond my very limited experience and may require a professional. I just don't know who to call; concrete expert, landscape architecture, etc.?

It sounds like runoff is directed away from your house – that's good thing. So, a simple metal or plastic edging at the high end of the patio should help. But, if you want to level up your patio, you can look into concrete lifting, or "mud jacking". After 40+ years years, the concrete patio built by my dad (and a few neighbors) has sunk on one end, with the same result as yours. Even messier, since now the water is running toward – instead of away from – the house. We're using a local company that's been around for decades (http://www.raiserite.com). They're highly rated on Angie's List, and provide a 1-year guarantee. I'm sure you can find a provider near you. (Make sure they guarantee their work – this past winter's freeze/thaws wreaked havoc on lots of patios and sidewalks around here, and there might be lots of new companies jumping on the bandwagon.) Hope this helps!
