Use alkyd based paint on wood, especially if it will be cleaned often. Latex and acrylic cannot hold a candle to oil based paint for durability. Much as they want to eliminate oil based paints they have yet to make anything comparable to oil or alkyd (synthetic oil).

there is a product on the market That I used on mine. You apply a primer first then a paint that is suitable for laminate.I did two coats. I don't know if it is available in the US.. The brand here in Australia is ' White Knight' It is very good and came up a treat ..Plus it's hard wearing and inexpensive. good luck with your project :)

For the grease, there is a product called Purple Power. I think you can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Use it only slightly diluted. Then wipe it with clear water. For the painting, there is a product called Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer made by Zinsser. It is in a white and blue can. You can get it at Home Depot, I know. Probably at Lowe's also. Hope this helps.
