Painting two different cabinets to look same

Our utility room has 1 set of cabinets that are quite smooth, stained/finished. Another set (added later) is from Home Depot and is stained/finished and you can really see grain. I want to paint all but want the finished looked to be the same. What is
proper way to paint so all will come out having the same finished look? Thanks.

I suggest General Gel Stain. I just refinished a bench and it is beautiful! You don't have to strip the old stain you just paint on and wipe off the new stain, however many coats until you have the color you want. Here's the video explaining the process. BTW, I don't sell this stuff, just a big fan of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIPJBi2ECeM

@Melisa Gingrich Thanks, Melisa but I want a colored painted finish. The video looks like a cool product to use if you want a stained finish.

I think it would be hard to get the one that shows the grain smooth enough because of all the grooves on it. So you could do a crackle finish on them and they would both have a textured finish.
  • Chalk Paint - no priming necessary other than cleaning them - you won't be disappointed - I promise !!!

Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas. I know chalk paint is costly and I have a lot of cabinets to paint. Thank you, Susan.

Sand very well until very smooth. Then apply a good quality primer such as kilz to prevent bleed through. Let dry thoroughly and then apple a good quality paint in semi gloss (2 coats) . Let dry very thoroughly between and be sure to thin the paint. Better to put two thin coats on, dries better and gives a smoother coat. Sand down any rough spots in between coats. This should fix your problem.

use spackle to get rid of the grain, then primer and good quality paint. I like Benjamin Moore cabinet paint.

They make primer that helps hide grain. I can't remember what it's called.
