Scuffed stair risers

We have white stair risers that are badly scuffed and impossible to clean. Any suggestions for covering or cleaning?

I have always been envious of people who have stairs because of the possibilities of making them into something amazing. Some of our Hometalk community have used stencils, or carpet runners. I have stairs in my back garden and have painted them in stripes of pink and lilac, but accept that this would probably not be appropriate for inside your house. Because of my interest in the subject, I have put together a (small) board.
