Transforming a Weed Patch Into a Handsome Flower Bed!

On Saturday morning we had two rather nasty patches of garden towards the sheds that were filled with weeds. That's before I decided to spend my weekend outside doing something about it... Get ready for a big change!
Here's what it looked like before I got to it...
And here's what the left hand side looked like once I was done. The laurel looks so much better now. I love the shiny green leaves contrasting with the brown bark.
Here's the right hand side from my position sitting on a garden stool at the 'shed-end' of the garden. I was too stiff and achy to move much by this point!
I took the majority of the weeds and long grass out and laid a weed barrier before covering it with bark. It looks great by the ever-growing laurel hedge! This is partway through laying the bark.
This was the other side once the fabric was rolled out. The rocks help keep it in place before it is pinned down and the earth goes on top of it (we ran out of bark to do this side but fortunately we had tons of compost left). Thankfully it wasn't breezy.
Here we are partway through tipping another bag of compost on the barrier.
That's me giving the thumbs up to my OH who took the pic from upstairs! It took ages to get up by this point after 2 solid days digging, weeding, edging, laying the barrier and moving all the bark and compost into place.

Now all I have to do is work out what to do with the spaces I have. The right hand side (the one in this picture) will be either a rock garden or an alpine garden I think, since it is slightly tiered. I can also use the rocks you can see in the picture and I think I have more.

What ideas would you suggest for the other side? You can easily move the bark and cut holes in the fabric to plant up things so it's easy to use. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

I hadn't considered pots. Hmm.. now that has made me think in a new direction. It might be a while before I come up with a firm plan for that side - so many good ideas here! Thank you :)
