@Bonnie you have a lovely little space....if you are going to keep the blinds for privacy i would just get some beautiful sheers to match you nice valance some sheers even have a pattern on them....this pic is dark and thats the reason i say sheers so it doesn't block the light have fun xx

I have a friend with similar window set up. She hung curtain panels nearly to the ceiling with antique looking door knobs. The panels had fabric hoops that hung from each knob. Three knobs per wall section. It looks very cute.

Considering the beautiful chandelier, l would go with full length panels hung between the windows on short rods.

I am a "NO CURTAIN" person. I love the look of windows and use only 1" blinds cut to width at the big box stores! For privacy during the day without shutting out the outside, turn the blinds slightly upward! Curtains are just another messy item that is in constant need! But good luck...I LOVE YOUR SPACE!
  • MaeGatineau MaeGatineau on Jun 08, 2014
if i had a kitchen like that i would go with no curtains

NO curtains. You have great windows.

Lace valances to keep elegance of chandelier and furniture.

    NO CURTAINS!!!

I love your room. I would not use curtains. I think they would clutter the room.
    • Julie Julie on Jun 08, 2014
@Liliana Wells and block all that wonderful light coming in! If you face the south and or west and it is an issue of heat and or fading from sun, I would just use mini blinds and a pretty cotton valance. I would pull the blinds all the way up if the sun isn't so bright or hot. I have no curtains on any of my windows, only valances to hide shades I pull down at night.
  • Marti Seelye Marti Seelye on Jun 08, 2014
pictures are hard to go by, but this looks dark... beautiful, but dark. I think i would just get lighter valances. would lighten the space up. it's lovely as it is too
  • Bonnie Bonnie on Jun 08, 2014
no curtains ..great windows...a cheery valance and then Solar Shades..you see out no one sees in and it filters the sun rays they are great looking a keeps things cooler.

I used 18" wide French cotton lace hung at the tops of my old windows in the kitchen and keeping room. Privacy is not an issue and we have nice views from some of the windows, so I can leave most of the window uncluttered and open, but the lace gives it an Old World look. I also put the same lace inside the glass doors on a dresser where we store dishes and it ties the room together.

I am usually a curtain person, but in your case I would go without. What you have now is really pretty. IF you feel you need curtains I would go with either roman shades or even something sheer from ceiling to floor.
  • Karen B Karen B on Jun 08, 2014
I like the valances you have and vote for no curtains. We need homes that are "no fuss', easy to live in. No to heavy curtains.
  • Marion Nesbitt Marion Nesbitt on Jun 08, 2014
Maybe the photo, but area looks dark. The chandelier is the major feature and adds a formality/elegance to work with/around. Your plants are lined up and look like they are taking the place of panels. Is there enough space to place the middle one beside one of the others? The heavy looking star clock seems to be at odds with the chandelier - can it be sprayed metallic? I would just keep the blinds you already have. If you really love curtains, then I would go with simple sheer swags.

@Sherry Wade Thought about that. However, it creates tension so is worthy in that regard.

I would go with the indoor hurricane shutters, that way you can adjust the ammt. of light, and keep out the cold or the heat. if they are too pricey, you can make a frame out of wood , cover it with material and put it up on hinges...........make it like shutters so you can open and close them when you want, only they will be on the inside. they use these in Nevada and they work amazingly well. I was shocked at how well too! I opened one to look outside and it was instantly 20 degrees hotter in the kitchen. look them up to see what I am talking about.

What about plantation shutters? Or maybe custom valances with your existing shades? Love the chandelier!
  • Bibi Sweet67 Bibi Sweet67 on Jun 08, 2014
Is a nice room but is to dark. I would put an off white long sheer curtains and it still would let the light in. I would also put like a ceramic pot for the plant's..
  • Adene R Adene R on Jun 08, 2014
I would do roman shades or just a valance...with the roller shade you can raise or lower them to allow outdoor light in...you could use the valance with the existing blinds or you could use them with the roller shade..also go with a lighter color material if you are not going to change the wall color.

Good idea Beatrice, the country valances do not go with the crystal light fixture. Nice room.
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Jun 08, 2014
No curtains or white very sheer if you need privacy. I don't much like the plaid valance. I think the room would look airier and fresher with light colors and not bringing the eye to curtains. The chandelier is beautiful and would more of a focal point with sheer white curtains and without the dark valances.

If you have to have curtains for privacy then make a valance of hankies or vintage tea towels and go wall to wall with it. Use miniature clothes pins on a clothes line to hang then that way it's super easy to take them down and wash them. Personally I would just go with blinds that fit inside the window frame. Curtains are such a pain to keep clean in a kitchen and any fabric will absorb the cooking odors.
  • Julie Julie on Jun 08, 2014
No curtains!! Let the sunshine in!!! Only a valance and maybe mini blinds that can be pulled all the way up and hidden by the valance or put down at night for privacy. My living room window faces east and I have no curtains on them just big beautiful openings to let the morning sun in;)

@Terra Gazelle I feel the same way about the mini blinds collets to much dust. but the sheer curtains would complements the chandelier really nice.
  • Jeani Jeani on Jun 08, 2014
I would do valances in eyelet fabric and then put pull down shades behind them in a print you can use when you want privacy.

how about keeping the toppers and adding wood blinds?
  • Sherry C Sherry C on Jun 08, 2014
The photo reminds me of a Victorian sun conservatory. I think lace panels would go well.
  • Capemom8741 Capemom8741 on Jun 08, 2014
I believe the chandelier and glass tables go nicely together, and sets the style of the room. I'm not a fan of the star clock because it looks too Americana. A vertical painting would add color and interest to that wall. Like others, I feel the plants dominate the room. Determine if you wish privacy when choosing window treatments. I recommend to keep whatever treatment you choose light in color and airy like in European homes. Not certain I would use lace panels because it's the kitchen, but how about using light colored panels with matching tie backs. Looks like a lovely room. Have fun decorating!

Pretty room. I would suggest bamboo shades that would be raised and lowered to control light. To add softness, I would add light-weight cafe curtains either solid or a pale colored pattern.
  • Judi Parmer Todd Judi Parmer Todd on Jun 08, 2014
How about drop cloths made into curtains? Keep them the natural color. Just let them hang straight down, and you can close them at night or when privacy is needed. I've seen them, and they are gorgeous.

Roman shades in a light colored print or full length curtains left open for light with a textured blind. Good luck!
  • Therese C Therese C on Jun 09, 2014
Layered lace curtains will give it a bright, yet romantic feeling to the area. Not the sheers, but layers & layers of white or off white lace.
  • Capemom8741 Capemom8741 on Jun 10, 2014
I like Pam B's suggestion of bamboo shades. They come in various color. A lighter color of bamboo would lighten the room.
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Jun 10, 2014
Yes...I love light. The glass table and the chandelier needs light ..with light colors , without the star clock. It would be such a welcoming room.
  • MaryAnn B MaryAnn B on Jun 12, 2014
I certainly would go with something light and airy for the valance. More contemporary. If not white something to coordinate with your colors. Perhaps a light linen. Beautiful room
  • Pauliegirl1 Pauliegirl1 on Jun 12, 2014
I like the idea of sheers....you could tie them back with "tea cups"!! Yes....just have the bottom of the cup cut off, maybe a glass place can do it for you if you are not comfortable doing it yourself....put the sheers in the cup and screw in a cup holder to hold the tea cups.....really cute!!
    • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Jun 13, 2014
@Pauliegirl1 I love the idea of tea cups..how unique. I was thinking also of tying up a bundle of lavender with the sheers to the side...I love lavender..lol. Smells so awesome even dried.
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Jun 13, 2014
How about glass shelves in front of the windows? You can put flower pots, grow some herbs..or have a collection of bottles or pottery..( I have a collection of both). It would be beautiful with clean clear glass bottles and bowls.
  • Pauliegirl1 Pauliegirl1 on Jun 14, 2014
Yes....you could find some pretty little tea cups with that "purple" color....put some lavender in them too!!! How cute would that be??!!

We had sheers in our living room, an entire wall of windows that faced out into our sunporch. The sheers, when drawn back during the day wouldn't cut the light in our living room but would provide needed privacy at night. I found that we wanted more privacy in the evening time and a sense of warmth in the cooler seasons that the sheers just couldn't do. I ended up with white linen cutwork full length curtains similar to Battenburg lace. We tie them back during the day with warm colored tiebacks (seasonal) and then drop the tiebacks at night for privacy. Since your room is a dining room, the teacup idea is sweet. I too love lavender, two plants blooming their brains out right now and I can't wait to harvest for little sachets!
