I do add some tea tree oil for added disinfection or lemon essential oil for fresh aroma. Lavender would work great too. I get my essential oils from Native American Nutritionals.

I used to make up liquid laundry detergent using borax, washing soda and liquid soap, heating it all and adding water, ... but now I just mix 50/50 washing soda and borax, keep it in a sealed container as a dry powder and use that. I add some fragrance.. we like frangipani, and then used a mix of 2l white vinegar and 1 cup of eposm salts for the fabric softener. I use about 1 tbsp of the power powder per wash.... it is also excellent as a pre wash soak, in the dishwasher or doing the floors (inc carpet stains) too. I then half fill the fabric softener container and set the machine going. I find this much better than the liquid soap as it is removing stains better and whites are staying white more. Works in hot or cold washes.
