Problems with flowers....

This is the second year in a row I've had problems with vinca. Last year I planted them too early, and we had a few cold spells which killed them. I had to totally replace two beds. This year, I waited till late May to plant them; yet, I've had a few of them shrivel up like last year. It can't be a lack of water (I'm almost 100% sure of that cause most of the others look ok). Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I guess I made an error here. My question is what can be wrong with my vinca? Same thing happened last year, but I had planted them too early and they all died when we got a few cold spells. This time, it's only a few of them. Honestly, I don't think I'm missing them in the watering process. They were planted in late May--definitely not too cold! Ideas, anyone?

It just might not be you. Things here are just not popping out like they usually do. By this time of the year we usually have lots of flowers and it is hot. We are just now getting to high 80s!

There are a couple of diseases that affect vinca. Both are influenced by watering. See more from Clemson here: http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/pests/plant_pests/flowers/hgic2108.html

I bought me some vinca from Lowe's and planted them in a pot an they are doing great all I can say is give them water when needed an sunshine an keep the soli around them loose enough for the plant to breath maybe not so much mulch or bark around it, other than that I guess I'm not much help. Sorry

Thanks for the suggestions! Vinca had always been a no-brainer for me in the past. And last year I know I planted them too early. What I failed to mention was I did replace them last year after the weather got better, and I lost quite a few to the same thing that's happening now.

I have vinca all the time. The most mistake I see people make is watering them to much. They need to be where they get some sun. Dont water until you know they need it. Over watering kills most all the plants. Hope this helps you

Thanks again everyone! This could be a kind of root rot, per Doug's link above. Incidentally, these vinca were planted after pansies like I do every year, but my pansies have not done well, either. Great information, Doug!
