If you want to keep the wood look, just give them a clean and a light (very light) sand and apply a Danish oil to them which will contain Tung oil. You can buy this in the hardware store or in some furniture or antique stores. You wipe it on with a soft cloth and then wipe it off. It brings the wood finish back to life and covers any scratches or marks or faded patches. You would need to apply a few coats. I think that would be more in keeping with the Danish style furniture of these chairs rather than painting them. The seat should be easily unscrewed and you could just recover the seat with a new fabric and staple it to the underside of the seat. Use a dust cloth fabric to cover the raw edges of the fabric underneath and tidy it all up. This can also be stapled as you won't see it from the top of the seat.

I would just clean and oil them. Then recover the seats to suit your style (easy). The mid-century style is unlimited in what you can do. Pick out some wild fabrics and cover each one in a different style and make a place mat to match the chair! Cover them in totally different styles and use them in different rooms. A small chair in any bedroom is great as is one near a table in a foyer!

I LOVE this chair! It's a mid-century style chair. If you like the bones you could refinish the wood or even paint it and recover the seats. Should be a pretty easy makeover :-)

@Leigh Anne @ Houseologie what kind of paint would you recommend? I want to go black to match them to my bookshelf. Thanks!

Thanks everyone! I think i do want a whole fresh look so i think i will go with painting it over - and i am going to recover the seats with a pattern fabric - here's hoping it goes smoothly!

Have you considered Annie Sloan Chalk Paint? No stripping is required and she has some great colors that you can also mix them together to get the shade you would like.

Great chair. I would go with a bright color paint in a glossy finish, painting the seats as well as the frame. I've spray-painted a chair with seats like this--that was 8 years ago and it still looks good. Having the seats painted the same color as the frame is an unexpected touch that draws compliments.

Painted black frames (semi gloss enamel after light sanding) and black and white covered seating. Timeless and elegant!

Love the style of the wood, I would clean it off and reupholster. Of course painting the wood is an option, you could even give it a metallic look but definitely reupholster!

I have two chairs that are almost a match for yours. I bought them many years ago and they are teak and I still have the black seats....

I have these same chairs... reupholstering the seat is easy, make the wood look fresh with just some cleaner, and you can match any decor with whatever material you choose. I've also done a pair with white-washing the wood frame and using a toile pattern material for the seat cover. Another pair I did painting the wood frame black, and used a black patterened material for the cover. I didn't bother taking the black faux leather material off the seats, just laid the new on top of it. Figured if I wanted to change it back some day it would make it easier.

I think its a toss up as to painting. Personally I would give the wood a good oil rub, recover the seats and call it a day. Remember once you paint, later down the road you may get bored with the color.

I would prime it and paint it white and reupholster the seat.
