I'm a huge lover of Krylon (or Rustoleum) spray paint. Clean it, dry it, use alcohol to wipe over it. The paint will bond well. Several light coats.
  • I would also add that using a spray primer (I use RustOleum's Rusty Metal Primer) will help the paint cover the piece better, as well as help it stick to the surfaces better!

@ @Sandi Gavlak Plotner I was hoping not to have to spray. Will the brushed on rustoleum work just as well? Thanks for your help I will try it either way

Is there any paint that doesn't have a strong smell that could be used on metal

@Shelly you can paint clear varnish on the paneling to give it some gloss or satin finish. And the shelving you can use a small foam roller to apply the paint if you aren't able to spray it on.
