We always clean ours out in the late winter so they will be ready for the little families.

I try to clean my birdhouses in late fall/early winter. It is a good idea to bleach them and then thoroughly wash, rinse and dry them (air drying is best). The bleach kills germs and bacteria that could pass on to next year's guests. I also do this for my bird feeders and baths several times a year,

Thanks June and Becca, but one more questions, June most of my bird house are wood would I still clean them as you suggested with bleach?

Late fall and winter are the ideal times to clean them out as the birds are no longer raising.

Ooops! I am a terrible landlord! I don't clean up after the previous tenant! Hey, that Momma bird is younger than I so she does the cleaning! HA! No, really, I did not know I was supposed to do this and since it never discourages the birds from coming back, I probably won't start! (But I have to admit, I have to clean up after they throw all the junk from last year out on the lawn...my porch!)

Vinegar would be less harsh on the wood. Use it just like you would to clean hardwood floors.
