Well, go for it! I have seen lots of people saying they painted theirs. Do a search on this site and on Pinterest. Not knowing what it looks like, your style, etc and I can't give any suggestions.

I take it that it's brick? Well' go ahead and paint away! Like Becky said, there are many examples out on the wide world of internet!

I painted mine white and it changed the whole look of the room. You first need to use a scrub brush to thoroughly clean the bricks. Allow it to dry for several days. If you don't let it dry paint won't stick. Brush on MASONRY primer, several coats, onto both bricks and mortar. If youdon't use enough layers of primer, the old brick color will bleed through. I have a dark room so I used semi-gloss latex paint, several coats, to have the paint reflect the light in the room. I did this about 9 months ago. I vacuum the fireplace occasionally, but that is all the cleaning it needs. If you burn wood in your fireplace you might want to check with your paint department in case you need to make any changes.
