New Home Tour

This is our new home. It's a 1961 Cape Cod that desperately needs some charm, come take a look!
The front of the house is covered by over grown bushes and heavy shade trees. Gardening may be a challenge here. Any ideas for instant curb appeal?
The kitchen is very small and dated. The cabinets are painted white, walls blue. I dislike the floral wall tile, any suggestions for replacement?
We were surprised to find out the back porch was covered with rustic barn boards covered with old red paint. I am tempted to paint them because the room is very dark even though it has lots of windows. To paint or not to paint? More pics on the blog.

Yard: cut down those bushes! Along the front porch is a great place for floral color if you like to garden. If not, plant some short interesting bushes to anchor the house, I like dwarf nandinas but don't know if they grow where you are. Good trees are a valuable asset, consult an arborist about trimming them back off of the roof a bit but otherwise just keep them healthy. Consider beefing up the porch posts in some way, they seem too skinny for the look of the house. The kitchen: I watch HGTV shows all the time where people looking for "charm" or "character" rip out those old cabinets. If you like the look of them and they are in good condition, you should keep them. Get rid of the floral tile, might be as simple as painting just those tiles. And, I too like the look of the sunroom wood just as it is. And you can always change your mind later. Great house, make it home, make it yours. Good luck!

I would take out all the front bushes (not in great shape anyways), add some white brackets to the top corners of your porch beams, and place a couple of white Adirondack or other chairs on the porch with some potted flowers or a little table. You could make a smaller curving flower bed along the front of the porch as well. As per the rustic wall, I love the look, but if it is too dark you could white wash it...so easy see my entry on white washing our fireplace. Also, if you paint the wood walls white, you still have the ceiling wood natural and those fab beams....Enjoy your new house, it is charming!!!!!
