Honeysuckle? If so, it can be invasive.

You can get white lilacs, or could be Privet which is usually used as a hedge over here x

I isn't invasive in the least it grows exactly like a lilac and has the same scent. Everyone has one and yes they trim it like a Privet. I let mine go wild and end up rewarded with scented blooms

    • @Donna Marie P Privets do have a wonderful smell and if you keep them trimmed they will not reproduce. The female plant has massive flowers while the male only has a few flowers that really do not smell. If you do not keep it trimmed the flowers turn into clusters of dark seeds and are really rather cool looking but they will germinate and hence invasive (here in zone 7)

@Donna Marie P I know there's a variegated one, but I'm unaware of other named cultivars of the northern, or Amur, privet. The botanical latin is Ligustrum amurense.
