Patio Prep for mixed-media application

Hi! We're getting ready to start work on a patio, and I'm looking for advice on the proper prep work. I'm using salvaged materials, including slate and flagstone, brick, and river rock with hopes of doing mosaic details with the river rock. What would be the best way to prep? For everything but the mosaic, I assume a standard gravel/sand set up, but the mosaic is stumping me. Typically these are done in mortar, but can mortar be laid over sand? Could rocks be set in polymeric sand and be expected to hold up? I'm in Cincinnati, Ohio (zone 6) so the freeze/thaw issue has me concerned. Thanks for any advice!

Sounds nice! You can put the mortar directly onto the sand for the mosaic part. I think it would be easier to get your positioning correct with that than the polymeric sand which needs to be pushed into the cracks and would probably bump your mosiac around. For the freeze/thaw issue, you'll want to make sure that there is a space for expansion either cut or designed into the patio that will preempt cracks.
