Chalk paint over mahogany cabinets..

After 30 years of use, my cabinets need refinishing. I want to cover up the oak color for something brighter and since I live in windy Az., I wondered how the chalk paint with wax would hold up. I have always cleaned cabinets with Mrs. Murphy oil soap. How does one clean off finger prints and etc. off of chalk paint?

I usually clean painted things with ammonia and water. Not sure about chalk paint.

Personally, I wouldn't use a wax finish over the Chalk paint in a kitchen. Too much grease and food spills for wax. You can use poly over it instead. That would be much better for cleaning food spills & grease.

Have you heard the good news? You no longer need to wax and buff chalk paint. Go to Shabbypaints.com to see what's available, with no priming, no sanding, no waxing and no buffing this non toxic, no Voc, made in the USA Chalked Paint.

Regular paint for kitchens is best. Chalk paint is more for decorative use, not practical application. And yes, you can put poly on top of it but, it needs to be water based like minwax polycrylic.

Thanks for the many comments. I will use the chalk paint on furniture, instead of cabinets......I do appreciate your interest in my post.....

Chalk paint will stick to anything and can be polyed over. Use water based polycrylic. If you need extra protection use several coats of poly as directed on can. They can then be cleaned .

Polyurethane will give an amber color to everything, and darkens with age.
