DIY Flower Tower

We made these self watering flower towers for the Moms in our family for Mother's Day. It incorporated two ideas we had seen online. The Flower Tower and a watering feature. The towers were a hit with the moms/wives. Now that it has been about a month since we made them, they have really filled out and look great.

Materials needed to build several flower towers.

Cut the fencing to form the shape of the tower. Secure it in the pot that will be the base.

Seal the end of the drain tile that will be at the bottom of the tower.

Set the drain tile in place. We added several inches of gravel for drainage.

We wanted a heartier mix of soil for our towers so we added black dirt and manure to potting soil.

After lining the tower with an old piece of tarp we filled the tower with the mixed soil. We packed the dirt slightly to minimize settling.

To plant the petunias we cut a horizontal slit and a vertical slit to form an upside down T. We used the knife to poke a hole in the drain tile for watering each plant as well.

Not much to look at when you finish. The petunias grow fast and filled in the gaps quickly. Add water to the drain tile every 3-4 days and your tower stays well hydrated.

That's better. Now it looks great and is a colorful addition to the patio.

What did you used to cover the bottom of the drain tile? Did you punch holes in it?

Why not use tomato cages???? You could turn either way with the wires stuck in the the ground or turn up & clip the wires off. Wouldn't be a cylindrical but should work just as well.

How does the drain tile water the plants all over.? Is the drain tile perforated all around it?

They did not explain very well look at the planted finish project, there is green wire how did it get there, I do these all the time. Unroll the wire make sure the length is cut allowing the circle to be about 2" longer than needed to fit the container or if you have, say 1 6" container you can put in middle and put the coiled wire in middle and fill soil in it also and plant around it. NOW lay the wire on the ground, cut your tarp same size of wire and zip tie it to wire several places, roll it in circle and wire it together just after it meets, I allow about 2" overlap Re .the drain tile, use tape to seal bottom well i use a small nail to put a hole in the tarp about every 6" .after you get all your plants in, fill the drain tile with water, water will drain out little at time to water plants. When water is needed just fill, I need to fill mine about every 3 days.

another thing you could use is pcv pipe. if you can find a big outer one. But at least you could do for inner and put an end cap on the bottom
