Cottage or Cape Cod?

I've been told both. I think it's more of a cottage. What do you think?

I vote Cottage but it could use a little TLC and accessorizing, I do like the symetry
  • I agree...I think it's more cottage. :)

It looks so quaint and needs a little TLC. I think it is more cottage than Cape Cod.
  • I agree with everyone. Cape cods do not have portulacas or front porches and they generally have a steeper roof, ornate front doors, and other architectural influences from new england.

    Cottage.

    I vote cottage...this is ADORABLE!
  • Thank you, Everyone! I'm glad you agree - Cottage, it is! Diana, I couldn't agree with you more. I have a lot of landscaping to do - Cottage Gardening! I'm picturing hanging baskets, hollyhocks, morning glories, cone flowers...:)

House looks in really good shape. Just needs some colourful plantings and maybe a shrub or two.
  • Cape Cod. Small but still a cape. Below is several types of styles. A few more are still left out, but you can see the differences in many.

What a wonderful concept, Jack! I've been house hunting recently and keep migrating to the American Small House. I even owned an a 1951 ASH a couple decade ago and it's been my favorite home ever!

I vote for cottage and it needs some colorful painting outside to bring out the architecture

I live near the Cape. I would not consider this a Cape although minus the porch it might fit the bill, this is more like a cottage you would see "down the Cape".

Because of the small size, I think of cottage.

From someone who actually -lives- on Cape Cod ... it's a cottage. A Cape Cod roof has a steeper pitch to cast away the snow, rain and neverending fog/mist ... especially as traditional capes have a wood cedar shingle roof which rots if you don't have at least a 45-degree angle. It's so cute!!! Get some bushes and flowers for that pretty little cottage! And maybe some sort of large, central art piece for the gable end of the little porticullus which juts out the front --- perhaps a large sun or other artsy piece?

Cape Cod is defined as generally being at least 1.5 stories high. The home is absolutely adorable, and I think going for a "cottage" look will give you the most options for adding character through fanciful landscaping, accent colors, etc. And if you decide you don't want it, let me know!!

I'm a home designer, and what you have is a Very Cute Storey-and-a-half! It could also be called a cottage, but not a Cape Cod which has a different shaped roof and is also called a "salt-box" style.
  • Barbara Turner Barbara Turner on Jul 01, 2014
This is actually a rancher. If it WERE a Cape Cod, it would ABSOLUTELY have the 2 dormer windows on top! Normally a cottage has a larger front porch / portico. I studied architecture & I.D. on my own for 2 years when I was younger. Oh and as far as a Saltbox style, uh, no! It needs to have the extended slanted roof from center top to lower back to qualify for that destinction.

Cape Cod has dormers in the front in the roof. Can be as many as you want but usually 2 or 3.

I would say cottage. Cape Cods are usually traditionally a story and a half high The roof has a steep pitch and usually has end gables. They traditionally have a wooden exterior, however there are brick Cape Cods and vinyl siding Cape Cods. The type of exterior is not an issue, the style of the house is the determining factor.
  • Le' Le' on Jul 01, 2014
It's definitely not a ranch (which is wide and spread out). It is not a Cape Cod because of the type of siding. Also, most CC (saltbox) are generally smaller...(much smaller) You have a 1950's small 1 1/2 story house. It can be decorated so cute...good luck.

It reminds me of houses that were called saltboxes. I think the Cape Cods with formers are called extended Capes. Is it post WWII?
  • Pam Bolton Pam Bolton on Jul 01, 2014
Your house is a uniquely American form of architecture. It is an American Small House also known as an FHA house or a Minimal Traditional House among other names. Mostly it came out of the great depression and WWII material shortages. You can research your house type easily on the internet. Look up Minimal Traditional or American Small House. I love yourfront door asnd your breadbox.
  • Kathleen M Kathleen M on Jul 01, 2014
Cape Cods have enough height on the second floor for living space. Ranches have all the living space on one floor. A cottage could be either a ranch or a cape, depending on the layout of the rooms.
  • Barbara Turner Barbara Turner on Jul 01, 2014
Cape Cods traditionally are known for their dormer windows! Period. Salt box houses are a gambrel roof and over extended in the back down!
  • Kathleen M Kathleen M on Jul 01, 2014
I lived in a cape cod home that did not have dormer windows. The two upstairs bedrooms each had a window on the outside wall. A saltbox is a cape with one story in the front and two stories in the back.

Love the bread drawer. Reminds me of my kitchen when I was a very little girl. My house had it and so did my grandmas house.

    a cute cottage!
  • Shelley Paul Shelley Paul on Jul 02, 2014
Your little house could be either and you should look at it as a BONUS that it could be one of several "types". To make if feel an one of them study the types and incorporate details like shutters, or awnings or landscaping that epitomise that type of style so that you can live in the style of house you "choose". Your house is cute and looks well cared for....It would make an adorable cottage
