Gardening: Does anyone have any remedies for keeping deer out of a veggie garden?

Other than shooting it, Someone has told me moth balls, but they aren't sure if it actually works. Wondering what people have actually tried that work...next year I'm definately getting a taller fence!

Fence height is not always the answer. If you place PVC poles at a 45 degree angle. Drill ...»
small holes in them about 2 foot apart. Then thread copper coated fence wire that you can purchase at tractor supply through them. Install a electrical fence system used to keep horses and cows in. You will prevent them from getting through. You will need to hang some cloth on the wires so the deer will see the wires at first. But after a while they learn not to touch or run into the fence.

The reason why to angle the fence is that deer jump high but not far. they sort of hop. They cannot clear distance but can jump many feet into the air. By placing the fence at an angle they will not be able to jump over because of the amount of width they need to cover to be successful.

The spaces between the poles can be 20 or more feet, you just need to keep the wire taught and prevent it from grounding out on the soil. If you place one or two near the ground, you will prevent most small critters from getting past as once their nose hits the wire they are gone.

Yard fountain

This is a fountain we made from a whiskey barrel, and old gold pan and a tea pot. This year I adorned it with a metal sculpture. I change it slightly every year. It sits outside my window and greets all my guests and I just love it.

To power wash or not to power wash?

What is the quickest and easiest way to remove mildew from siding? I have heard that power washing can lead to water damage behind the siding. Is there an eco-friendly product to that I can use with a brush to remove the mildew? Also, is there any way to prevent it from coming back?

  • I put these globes on the fireplace mantel.
  • Another view of the globes on the fireplace mantel.
  • This vintage globe has some cool graphics.
  • I painted the columns white and distressed them a bit.
  • Before, these are the original two sets of columns from the Masonic Hall.
  • I took of the masonic symbols since they looked primitive. Painted them distressed white and added the black and white checkerboard up top for whimsy. I placed these in the doorway between the foyer and study. Hubby will add a bit to the bases to raise them up to meet the doorway molding. 1
  • A close up of the black and white check. 2
  • This set had the masonic symbols left on since they were very detailed and when painted all white, they don't stand out. This set was placed in the media room/man cave on each side of the fireplace.
  • These globes are so cool and the patina was fantastic so I left them original.
  • This original globe has moon and stars with a couple of shooting stars painted on it. 1

Great find...Old Masonic Columns!

The little town that my son's lives in Kansas closed down the Masonic Hall. He got the four columns (2 matching sets) complete with globes and gave them to me! Here is what I did with them along with the before picture.
