  • Candles sure are romantic!

We Tested Ways to Cut Bathroom Smells

We tested matches, essential oils, plain candles, scented candles, aerosol spray, and central air conditioning. We tested them on both "emergency level" and "ambient" bathroom smells. The result? The best for emergency level smells was lighting a match, or scented spray. The least effective was candles, scented and plain. What works for you?

Our Mosaic Kitchen Island

This is a mosaic I created on our kitchen island. It's of a birch tree in our garden. My kids (aged 3 & 6 at the time) helped create the flowers across the bottom.

  • This is the "ABC Chair" by The DIY Showoff http://diyshowoff.com/ (I'm a HUGE fan.) She made this chair for her mudroom. What you need: Old wooden chair (sanded) primer, canvas alphabet stickers, spray paint and a coordinating pillow. She has the full tutorial here: http://bit.ly/yU3Gu3 1
  • This desk is by Jamie with C.R.A.F.T. http://www.creatingreallyawesomefreethings.com/ I love the color and it seemed less daunting for a first timer like me. Jamie was so helpful with her advice. She said to check thrift stores and second hand stores often, make sure the desk is real wood, sturdy, and has nice lines. Then. all you need is some sand paper and a few bottles of spray paint to give the desk a fresh look in any color you want! You can see the whole project (including the rest of that room which is awesome, btw) here: http://bit.ly/zqCfxn 4
  • This window messaging center is by Cyndi www.thecreativityexchange.com I was thinking about used windows because I had just seen Terry M's window pergola :). Cyndi says you can do any panels you want, this one has a chalk board, bulletin boards and dry erase boards but you can really get creative. She provides really thorough instrutions on how to make this here: http://bit.ly/ApOm0o 1
  • Ahh, LOVE this one by Mandi with Vintage Revivals http://vintagerevivals.blogspot.com All you need is a lampshade, yarn and a little hot glue. To make it look as awesome as this, don't try it without reading her tutorial first: http://bit.ly/tyhIAe She's got some great tips, you'll feel pretty confident that you can actually do this!
  • I fell in love with this craft room island by Sandra, http://www.sawdustandpaperscraps.com/ and was delighted to see the blog post titled: "Inexpensive, Easy, Home-made Countertop." It doesn't get better than that! Here's what Sandra said when I emailed her about this project:
"You don't have to have a lot of experience with building or woodworking to create a similar space. Stock cabinets from a home improvement store - or thrift store finds could be grouped together to create an island. I built my island countertop out of MD edged with inexpensive pine. No power tools necessary for that project." You can see the full project here:

  • That drill/driver isn't big enough, I need more power! I don't think so Tim! These compact drill/drivers pack more of a punch than you might think. Check out what this real user thought: http://bit.ly/wZF0LT 4
  • Everyone dreams of owning a giant cabinet saw, but not everyone has the room or the budget (or loves their fingers too much). Check out what this user thought about something a little more accommodating: http://bit.ly/ArMdNV 12
  • Running out of room in your shop? This miter saw takes the space of a compound miter saw, yet still gets the cutting capacity of a sliding rail miter saw. Check out what this contractor thought: http://bit.ly/wz8Wdh 6
  • Tackling any projects with multiple materials? A twin blade circular saw is a great solution allowing you to cut without switching blades. Watch it in use: http://bit.ly/yOvtYw 1
  • Laser levels are handy tools that offer faster, more accurate solutions for a variety of tasks. Green lasers offer a 400% brighter line for interior work. For more info check out: http://bit.ly/zp8ezo 1

  • Dog gate built using shutters 4

My first share -- I wanted something a little nicer and more permanent than a baby gate to try and keep our three dogs

out of the living room. (One of the dogs is old and has ... problems of the floor-ruining sort.) I'd bought these old shutters at a yard sale a few months back and by attaching two and a half of them together and securing them at the top and bottom with trim, they made a perfect gate. Took less than an hour start to finish.
