May Garden ~ Historic Goodstay Gardens

On a recent balmy spring evening, the Arden Garden Gild visited the grounds of the Goodstay Gardens on Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington, Delaware. At the height of its spring bloom, the ...»
collection of six enclosed gardens was a sight to behold. Breathtaking peonies planted in long flowerbeds filled the air with a lovely scent. Roses, iris, columbines, rhododendrons and many other lovely blooms filled the garden with color, accompanied by bird song as dusk approached.

Dating back to the late 1600′s, this colonial garden has undergone several restorations and improvements: in the 1920′s by Ellen Coleman duPont Meeds and Robert Wheelwright and, for the past twenty years, by the Friends of Goodstay Gardens group.

Goodstay Gardens is an oasis in the city, a trip to the country through a stone gate entry. Here is a small sampling of the beauty contained within. I hope it inspires a trip of your own to discover this garden gem.

! Mostly a spring garden but they are working on adding more seasonal color. The woodland is gorgeous too, but was past its prime when we visited.

May Garden ~ Birdhouses & Flowers

In looking around the garden, I see a theme has developed. It's all about the birds and flowers. With approximately one hundred birdhouses, I suppose my collection is now nearing ...»
intervention status! Some are decorative and some are functional with clean-outs, but long ago I found out the birds are the ones who decide which is which. A bossy little house wren has commandeered the gazebo garden where she and her hubby have taken up residence in a blue bird house, chasing any other birds who dare to come near.

Every new flower is an awaiting surprise and , as I stroll our garden, bird song greets me. A red fox streaked across the front lawn this early morning, probably from the cat food on our porch. We've had lovely rains and everything is an intense shade of spring green.

5 Years ~ Before & After in Our Fairfield Garden

Hard to believe but we just marked our fifth anniversary in our "new" old house. Many , many projects later, we still have a few major improvements to finish. This spring is exterior ...»
painting and new garage doors, but we are hiring those done. Even though I'm a good painter and have painted houses before , inside and out, my ladder days are over!

For me, the most rewarding changes have been accomplished in the landscape. My best friend teased the daylights out of me when we bought a house with "tortured shrubbery" (clipped into box and spiral shapes). But it was a half acre after a tiny lot and, even though two-thirds of it was covered in ivy and pachysandra, I knew there was a wonderful garden waiting to happen. And, there was a garden shed and an extra garage on the back of the house to store all my garden tools, pots and whatnot!

Bend in Redmond. Now I live in Southern Oregon (grants pass) and there are some things I miss about central oregon, but many things I don't! Don't miss the hot summers and nothing that is colorful! Only Juniper trees, rocks (lots of rocks!) sage brush, and tumbleweeds! But I do miss the smell of Juniper after the rain, the really cool nights...one day I remember we got to 100 during the day but hit 35 at night! WE had the high in State but the low in the NATION on that same day! hehe

Happy Mother's Day ~ Garden Tour

Happy Mother's Day to all my wonderful readers, I hope it is a lovely day for each and every one of you! This little garden tour is my tribute to mothers everywhere, who often put their ...»
own wants and needs aside for those they love. Thank you for rocking the babies through the night, doing your work and chores with little ones at your heels, helping each one feel like the favorite and being the anchor of our families. Without a mother's love this would be a sad world indeed.

Have a sweet day doing what you like the most with the ones you love!

DIY Project ~ Mother's Day Fairy Garden

Just in time for a Mother's Day project, I found a cracked birdbath sitting in a neighbor's curbside trash. I have been saving little bits of things to make some fairy gardens and this ...»
just plopped into my lap (actually the front passenger seat of my car).

Although it looks more extensive, this project took just forty-five minutes to put together, not including the heaving and hauling of the very heavy concrete birdbath to and from the car!

Outdoor Rake Decor

At a recent rummage sale I picked up two vintage bamboo rakes. Of course, Len asked me what I was going to do with them. My standard answer is ,"A project". So here the project is! ...»

A floppy rose needing a trellis and some drain pipes I wanted covered gave me the opportunity to put those rakes to use. The first rake fit nicely into the rose pot and became its trellis. A pretty bird house added with twine gave the whole thing a little pizzazz. To camouflage some of the drain pipe on the other side of the garage, I tied the rake to the front and added another birdhouse.

Voila! I have garden accents that cost only three dollars (I already had the birdhouses) and make a nice display on either side of our garage. It doesn't get much easier than that!
