This old cabinet was headed for the trash at a friend's yard sale, but I just knew it had potential!
I could see past the dirt and the pile of broken trim and broken doors.
All of the pieces were here, they were just.... in pieces! :)
I brought it home and removed all the door hinges and broken scraps, and lightly sanded the unstained areas. I sat in my garage being used as shelving for a couple of weeks.
Knowing it would take awhile before I had money to buy stain, I went ahead and mixed up some paint and water to blend the unstained areas with the rest of the cabinet, just so I could get a look at what I was visualizing.

You "real" furniture re-finishers are cringing, I know.
I tacked the bottom trim and crown moulding back in place.

When I first set eyes on this piece, I could see it full of ironstone, and maybe a pretty gathered skirt across the bottom for concealed storage.
Even though it's still in my garage area, I wanted to dress it up a little to see if my vision was really possible. I added some ironstone and other accessories I love.
I added a gathered "skirt" by hanging a curtain panel across it with a piece of twine.

**UPDATE** Goodness, I've had such a response here and on Facebook about the fabric on the bottom! I should have made it clear (as I did in the actual blog post) that this is NOT the "actual" skirt or fabric I would use- I was just playing around to see if I would like it with a curtain across the bottom! I hear you loud and clear, that most don't like the way this looks, but I was just sharing "progress" on this piece. I do appreciate all the feedback, you guys are awesome to take the time to comment! Come visit my blog! :D
It still needs a few little fixes, but I love the way its coming along! It was fun playing 'dress-up' : )
Before and after... I'm really glad my eyes were open to the possibilities. Head over to my blog post to see lots more photos!

Personally I like it open all the way to the bottom with no curtain, but that's just my taste and I'm in no way implying that putting a curtain at the bottom is a bad idea. I love that you saw the potential in this piece because I can tell already that it's going to be gorgeous. I love the items you're thinking of displaying in it, I think they're perfect for the piece. Great job! Hope you will post more pics when you are completely done. :)

I love the skirt on it. A little stencil inc on it would be perfect. Gives it that rustic charm!!!!
