Heat pump shuts down at least once a day

Have a 13yr old Carrier heat pump 15 seer puron system. A week ago outside unit stopped running inside unit continues to run. A/c man first said compressor was seized, then he checked other things and found a bad compassitor. Replaced it, turned the power back on and it was fine for 3 days, now once a day it starts getting warm int he house and notice the outside unit is not running. Turn the power off at the breaker, turn the power back on. A/C restarts and runs for another day and then shuts down again. Keeps happening once a day. Any ideas what's causing this? It's a 2 speed compressor

I'm no expert, but it might be that that replacement capacitor is no good. They supply a bit of ooph to get the motor initially running. The repair guy can test it with his meter. I'd think there'd be a warranty on the part. If you get into it yourself, be careful! Those things contain some voltage, like a battery, and can whack the heck out of you.
  • Hey @Jeff Visco - Sounds like a condenser fan motor overheating intermittently. Most capacitors are a dual purpose capacitor. Meaning the capacitor serves not only the compressor, but the outdoor fan motor as well. Capacitors (especially cheaper ones) lose their microfarad (capacity) over the years. It's important that if you have maintenance done to have the technician check these capacitors under load (not just with his/her meter but while it's running) to ensure an accurate reading. Have the company come back out and ask them to check the temperature of the outdoor motor and the bearing condition. As always with air conditioning units there are a lot of moving parts all working at the same time so I'm guessing based on the information given. Is the breaker tripping? Some times they get old and weak and need to be replaced. Your replaced compressor should be under warrantee so I would call the outfit back that did the compressor and have them check it out.
