Back yard wasted space needs ideas

Above an old uneven stone wall at the back of our yard is an 8'x72' blank space that has been dry, packed, rocky dirt since the house was built in '61! How can u beautify? Cheaply?

From your description, it seems this space is behind that hedge...that small show of white near those trees? Can you provide a better, close up photo? From what I can gather, this is elevated about 3'?

This pic is taken from the back corner of the yard, the dirt is the space in question and yes, it's elevated about 4 ft with stone retaining wall. I'm sorry for difficult pics, it's hard to capture in a photo!

since you are in Ca and have lovely warm temps unlike us here in the northern climes, I would suggest huge pots of flowers since the dirt is so rocky and jam packed. Those lovely big urns filled with palms, grasses, flowers native to Ca. a that grow fairly big. You could also do some sort of stone paver as a walkway around the pots or in front of them. Make sure you use flowers that have lots of color because you need something that pops and catches your eye.. Some yard art on the ground amid the planters would be lovely. A gazing ball sitting on a stand, an obelisk either on the ground or in a huge pot with a flowers growing up it.

f you have little kids. can make a sandbox in core were shade is. close in ust that part of it. put a swing in the middle then plants and flowers around that use a covered swing.
