Keeping the beautiful patina of pallet wood but removing splinters

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jul 14, 2014You cannot sand the finish without loosing the rough texture of the woods surface. Only thing you can do is to seal the finish using a clear coating. This will darken the wood also. So test in a small spot you will not see to determine what the final look will end up being.Helpful Reply

Terra Gazelle on Jul 14, 2014you can sand them smoother, but then take steel wool soaked in vinegar and rub over the wood, ages it and will put back the patina. You can use balsamic vinegar and black tea to make an aged appearance...also put the color water color you want in vinegar and it will give you a nice stain. I put a small copper fitting in vinegar and after setting for a while I had a beautiful calypso blue.Helpful Reply

Linda Skinner on Jul 15, 2014The only way I would do is run the boards thru a planer {sanding machine} then use the steel wool/vinegar treatment on them.Helpful Reply

Paul on Oct 06, 2016Hello Sally, Pioneer Wood Patina makes a safe, water based powder concentrate which ages the surface of the wood. It has no odor like the vinegar/ steel wool receipe and ends up with a nice brown/ grey color. So, you can sand all of the patina off to get a nice smooth board, then apply Pioneer Wood Patina to get it back. You can buy it at www.pioneer-wood.com. Click my profile to see a project that I did just like the one you are doing here.Helpful Reply

Terra Gazelle on Oct 07, 2016I used pine sheathing and cut them in 6 inch widths..at Lowes they will cut for free. I got the 3/8 thick pine sheathing...it has a nice grain and is smooth. I am doing a plank wall in my kitchen and wanted something more uniform in depth. The two 4x8 sheets that I needed was a little more then 20.00 for both..and a whole lot less trouble. I will either use the vinegar and 0000 steel wool after useing black tea or white wash them, I have not yet decided.Helpful Reply
