bug invasion

Bug invasion in my shed. There are at least 5 at a time of these guys on the inside of my shed door every time I open it. They don't seem to be spiders. They hop (really high). I don't hear them making noise. They have speckled legs and are fascinating and ,to me, really horrifying at the same time. Does anyone know what it is, whether it bites, and what I can do to make them go away? (There are two in this picture and if you blow it up, you can see the legs of a third.)

  • Cave Crickets. Found a lot in damp, cool dark locations. Use a bug bomb and place it in the shed and that will remove them quickly. I have been in some basement crawl spaces that contain thousands of them. They will not hurt you nor harm anything. But they are a sign that the environment in which they are living is not so good. Air out the shed, and keep it dry. Only way around them.

Looks like a cricket but never saw striped legs. They would be sprayed long ago with Home Defence if it was me!

Why spray something that won't hurt you, don't we have enough poison to contend with in our environment?

Spotted Camel Cricket. Likes dark, damp places like your shed. Totally harmless to people. No need to spray insecticides into your environment, they won't hurt you but they can be startling because they jump high and suddenly. Here's a bit more about them: http://www.insectidentification.org/insect-description.asp?identification=Spotted-Camel-Cricket

They are cave crickets. I had them in my house in NJ. They are creepy buggers!

Crickets. Get rid of the dampness and they will leave too!
  • Judy Judy on Jul 15, 2014
Like Joan said....no need to use poison, no need to kill crickets, they're harmless. These bug guys want to kill everything that crawls.

We have nicknamed them oobies. Can't handle them being near! I swear they jump as high as I am tall. Yuck!

We call them sprickets. It looks like a combination of a spider and cricket. Scary as heck!

If you want to worry about scary then go to New Zealand and see a Wetter - you would need your brown trousers on to cope with the sight of one of them! Google it for a picture. They are massive! Most bugs are harmless and if these are indeed crickets then please don't hurt them. They are more afraid of you than you are of them. Look at the difference in size for goodness sake! No wonder they leap 6 feet into the air when a human approaches! There they are sitting in the dark minding their own business when the door opens and in comes something towering six feet tall - Eeeeek - the spectre must keep them having nightmares for days afterwards! LOL! Harmless - live and let live!

@Martha My husband is from New Zealand and first told me about these critters. I have never personally seen one, but my hubby assures me that they are pretty freaky looking. As you could see when you Googled Wetter they can be as big as your hand! I thought it was just Australia that had super sized insects - LOL!

If you read the link that was posted here by Elaine Young, you will see that these crickets are in fact your friends as they eat other insects.

I say learn to live with them, they eat the bug's you don't want around.

Put a few frogs in there - bet they would love dinner!

@Doreen Rossan Then you would have the snakes moving in to eat the frogs!

Loving all the comments. Can see which insects give whom the "willies"! My son is freaked out by all insects and must do a perimeter spray with whatever will kill 200 some odd bugs. I said, well what about the ladybugs, they eat the aphids on my roses. My son says.... oh..well there aren't any aphids either..it will be ok... I'm like...ummm..... some bugs are beneficial...his response...beneficial to mankind? How? LOL..Those of us who see the "circle of life" with the insect population get it...those who cannot stand bugs..don't see the effect of killing off the bug population. Hey there are other animals in the food chain that eat those bugs you just sprayed to death. And other animals that eat those...and on we go and that is how the beginning of the end begins..jus' sayin' :)

Have to laugh...I have crickets, spiders, toads, and the occasional grass snake in my basement. They can startle especially if it's dark and late at night, but, they do no harm. I personally like my basement "pets" and they get rid of pests...

@Jill Thurow if the crickets, toads , spiders(oh no not !) and snakes(uck) are your pets-I don't even want to know about the pests...
  • Jill Thurow Jill Thurow on Oct 18, 2014
They are not pets nor are they pests. I live by a lake (across the street). They come with the territory. I have two pugs for pets...

They are camel crickets aka cave crickets. They like dark, moist places. They are somewhat harmless, but crickets will eat dirty clothes, so you don't want them in your house. If you are so inclined to use pesticides, a bomb or general spray will kill them.
