Laundry Room, Pantry or Summer Kitchen? You Decide

When I was growing up my Mom had two kitchens. One for everyday, and a summer kitchen in her basement where she canned and spent time putting up produce from her bountiful garden. This place was my favorite place to be! Her friends would come to visit and they would spend time sharing tips and recipes, and sometimes help if a large batch of something was on the stove. Then tea or coffee was served and the ladies would share the events in their lives with one another.

As a result, when the time came to remodel my laundry room I wanted something just like my Mom had. I envisioned a space for more messy prepping of food. Somewhere to store my rather large collection of china and serving pieces, my surplus of food stuff and of course, doing the laundry...

I hid the washer and dryer behind bi fold doors. Out of sight, out of mind.

The collection of vintage china could be easily accessible, as well as displayed behind doors accented with chicken wire for a casual country look.

An abundance of white and very serviceable Formica counters for folding laundry or prepping food, as well as crafting.

A floor to ceiling plate rack holds large platters, vintage silver and glass vases for flower arranging.

Beadboard accents contribute to the simple, country look with oiled bronze hardware.

Instead of cupboards, I chose deep drawers to hold dishes and more dishes. I have a serious addiction to vintage china!

Additional built in storage keeps pots and kitchen appliances organized. This was something I added since my working kitchen upstairs is part of an open concept great room/conservatory/breakfast room. As a result when I am entertaining, I can keep cooking clutter and messy details out of sight.

I lowered the counter height just a wee bit, since I am only 5'2."

A large stainless steel sink was a priority, and I love the faucet from Costco. I have seen them online for three times the price!

It is an airy, open work space.

Large laundry baskets and other basketware finds space on the ample counters.

I am very happy with the result of this space! It serves many functions and although a far cry from what I recall from my childhood, it brings back happy memories of my Mom and her summer kitchen.
