  • Behr is the same product as Restore made by Rust Oleum. Both products are good, but you need about twice the amount to do the coverage that they state. The biggest complaint that I have heard is peeling. But have found in my opinion that was caused by not following the directions about the proper prep work that is required in order for the paint to properly stick. Its thick and heavy, Those large pails you see are only about two thirds full. You dip your roller right into the bucket, and you do not use a roller pan. Application is pretty forward, but you need to roll slowly and be sure to put drop cloths on everything surrounding the deck as it will splatter no matter how slow you go. If the deck is up next to the house, mask it off using wide rolls of masking paper or news paper or you will be painting the side of the house when done. Painting should follow prep right away. If you wait to the next weekend to paint after de- glossing the surface and cleaning it, you will need to go over it again as oxidation will begin preventing the finish to properly adhere to the surface. Only wait about one hour after its dry enough to put the 2nd coat on. Any longer and you may have issues with the new 2nd coat from sticking to the first. The finish is not all that smooth. In fact its sort of rough for a while until the paint surface wears down a bit. It is a hard job and the more hands available the better it will be.

I was going to try it until I went on line and read the reviews! It is reported that it is costly and lasts a short time before it starts to chip off...which is a huge job to get off! I discarded the idea of using it. And that "Restore" is reported to get really hot! We have lots and lots of trees (I can truly say I live in a treehouse) which constantly fall on the deck, then they stain it. I don't think pressure washing is good for the wood, so I guess I will just have to live with an ugly deck.

@Jeanette S, I read the reviews too, and now I'm like you, I sure don't want all the work and than it now work well, thanking about just using Thompson water seal. Our deck is in good condition, just thought the Behr would be pretty and last a long time, thank you for your comment.

@Woodbridge, thank you so much, just about decided not to try it, as I would be doing it myself, and not sure I'm up to it, read some of the reviews online, thank you for your comment, that helps.
  • Just use a good quality wood exterior solid stain on the deck. If you have a lot of cracks in the wood, you can purchase wood filler that can be applied, sanded, sealed then stained. To see if you need to seal the deck, sprinkle some water on the surface. If it is absorbed, its time to seal. If it beads up, your good for another year.

thanks for all you help, I have another question, do you think I could put stain down with a garden sprayer? instead of a paint roller.
  • yes you can do that Carol, Purchase a low cost plastic sprayer that you will not want to save as the stain will gum up the inside making it useless after the stain dries inside. Do this on a non windy day and be sure to back roll using a roller so the surface looks smooth and even. I have used these sprayers all the time when doing horse fence stain. You will find that you will go through a bit more stain then if you brushed it and rolled it. Bu the time savings are so much worth the cost involved.
