I live in a log home. The kitchen cabinets are the same color as my walls. They blend right into each other. I'm going to paint the cabinets. I'm leaning toward white or a grey blue. Would appreciate dome opinions..since i can't make up my mind! Please
My current kitchen. Cabinets blend right into the walls.

I painted my cabinets; uppers picket fence white (Martha Stewart collection color from home depot) and the base cabinets a darker blue/grey..I have wood looking floors and colors look great with the wood. I also did my countertops and backsplash in white so you get this white, white, white effect from counter up and the lowers ground all the bright - and took uppers to ceiling to keep the eye going up. Painting wood cabinets can be a bit scary and a lot of work; but I don't regret it -- luv luv luv them : )

We just bought the log cabin pictured here and I am having the same issue. When I examined the cabinets and realized their fine quality I had second thoughts about painting them. I have a white back splash, and will hang white curtains. The counter top is white and may be replace once we are in the house. My answer I think is to paint the ceiling white and then put colorful area rugs on the floor. Empty, the log cabin is like one big casket - no kidding! It needs some contrast.

@ @Rita Wozniak, thanks for saying that! Kathy and Beverly, please don't paint your cabinets. They're beautiful!

@Beverly Cabaday i think with your ss appliances you would be happy with white upper and blue grey lowers.....your counters would look good with this combo also... post pictures when you do them xx

I would buy some samples and paint a door or two. Live with it a bit...the kitchen will speak to you.

I love log homes-lucky you!! I understand your dilemma with everything blending in together. You have shades of brown everywhere: in the floors, cabinets, countertops, walls and backsplash-even the curtains and rug are brown. Clearly, the cheapest thing would be to paint the cabinets. But, if cost were not the issue, I would replace the countertops and paint out or replace the backsplash instead of the cabinets; I can't really tell from the pic but they look like they are in great shape and have cool hardware. I would paint the trim around the window and add the contrast color in the curtains and the rug before I made any permanent paint changes.

I like what Sue says above. If you decide to change the color of the cabinets (that would be my choice) you could go with a stain such as Polyshades (by Minwax?) you could add color while still keeping the wood look. Artists and designers often use a complementary scheme. The complementary (opposite on the color wheel) of the orange toned wood is blue. If you go with a medium blue, not to grayed down, or a pastel so you have the good contrast and balance the strong color of the wood walls. It would be a big relief from all the wood tones in the rest of the room. I would use red (cranberry red rather than Christmas red) as the secondary color. Also, I would get rid of the valance because of the color. When you hang another with the same blue and red and other colors, put it much higher to let more light in. I would use creamy white tiles for the back splash and perhaps a thin line of blue that matches the cabinets added or find hand-painted decorative tiles to use as accents. Pick up more blue with these tiles perhaps with other colors too. I can't tell if your counter top is a laminate or granite. If they are laminate and you have the resources I'd change the counter to a color that is similar to the main color of the back splash. It could still have a stone look for some texture. If you decide on painting the walls instead, you can still go with a medium blue.

I think the stain idea is the way to go. I too live in a cabin, but wouldn't think of painting my wood work. With pets and kids, it's much easier to touch up stained wood than a painted surface.
