Cleaning floor before painting

I removed the vinyl floor from the laundry room, only to find there is a lot of glue residue. How do I remove it? I want to paint the floor, but it is a mess, the backing of the vinyl floor is still attached. Can anyone help?

    I used a heat gun when I removed glue residue from my hall floor. I've found a citrus cleaner and/or stripper works well in recent days.
