I just purchased this China Cabinet. It needs painting because it is scratched and stained. How should I paint this. Any and all suggestions really appreciated.

If you are like me determined to do something you are going to do it. I would take the stain or sand it down.. I would, personally, not paint it, but I CAN see it done in buttermilk creamy color.. made with buttermilk wash.. they have the stain for it.. It will help to make whatever you put in it.. show more perfectly.. I like the way it looks.. I would polish it up with scratch cover and let the knicks in it, give it character.. There is no telling how the knicks got there.. and whomever did the knicking is probably not around to tell you. I just think that adds character to a piece. If you do stain it with the paint I said I'd use.. I think I might sand it down in places.. with the wood showing through, make it look distressed but not too much. This is just an idea.. like I said, I would just clean it up but if you want to paint it.. that it is why they make paint remover.. if you don't like it.. just take it off.. nothing gained.. or lost but your time..

If past posts are anything to go by you will get a number of people suggesting you don't paint it at all. However if you do decide to go ahead there are many examples of painted hutches and china cabinets on Hometalk and Pinterest you can look at to get ideas. You haven't said where the cabinet is going but the decor of the room is important too. White, grey and creamy colours are very popular and many people use chalk paint because you don't need to sand or use a primer before painting (although you must wax or varnish it afterwards to preserve the finish). There are a number of different brands available and each have their fans but Annie Sloan is one of the leading makes, it's not cheap but a little goes a long way! Again you can check out her website or just search for chalk paints in general, I know that some are easier to buy than others. Without knowing your style it's hard to say what would look best but looking at what other people have done (especially as so many have tutorials on how they did it) may be your best option. Good luck and I hope you post the results :-)

Paint it!! It's so dark and heavy and, well, brown!! Search here on Hometalk for painted hutch and you'll see a plethora of beautiful makeovers. My favorite is the one from Simply Vintageous where she put wallpaper on the back. Or, you can paint the back part a contrasting color to highlight what is displayed inside. Make it yours with your own design. I hope you post pictures of your results. Good luck!

Am not a fan of painting decent wood furniture. But ..this is an exception. There is no redeeming quality to the grain so, to me, It is ugly and bulky. I would paint this piece.

I would paint it a creamy light yellow using chalk paint. Hometalk is a great place to start searching for ideas.

sand it back to the wood and stain it in the color you want it to suit the other furnitures around
