Bugs destroying my hybrid daylilies

Nancy McNail
by Nancy McNail
For the past three years, I've had these little 1/4" crawling bugs that destroy the buds on my lillies. They look like they are red with a black stripe on their back. I would love to identify what they are and how to get rid of them. I have serious money invested in this garden. Thank You!

Hi Nancy! Could you upload a photo of these bugs? That will make it easier for other hometalkers and myself to give you better answers and ideas! You can add photos by clicking the upper right drop arrow and select "edit" (see screenshot). Hope this helps! :)

Look up box elder bugs and see if that is what they may be>

Lilies in Winnipeg have been devastated by red beetles. Ours are more elongated than a lady bug, bright red, no black stripe on back. They eat holes in the leaves as well as the buds. Maybe you have a variety of same. I get rid of them like potato bugs. Pick off, flick off, brush off and destroy.

My first thought as well was the red lily beetle, but as Marion says, they don't have a black stripe. Neem oil has been found to be effective against lily beetles, if applied thoroughly and regularly.

@Nancy McNail I don't think there's any benefit to spraying this season. Keep an eye out for their first appearance next year.

I dust my plants with "Seven" to keep bugs and rabbits from eating on them.

Nancy I have red beetle on my Oriental Lilies and the only thing that seems to keep them at bay is Bayer Advance Rose and Flower insect, disease and mite control it works very well.

@Nancy McNail it would have no effect on next year plants they already mated and the larva is deep under ground, I just like to kill any one that I see on the plants, start spraying next year as soon as you see the first sign of this pest
