Tomato stealing squirrels

I've always been lucky with my tomatoes, but this year squirrels are stealing them. They eat half of them and leave the other half all over the place. I even had a green tomato fall out of the oak tree in the front yard. My question is how do I stop these little thieves so I can get at least some tomatoes?

You could try scent-based repellents—coyote urine, garlic-based sprays—but I suspect none will work as well as a mesh fence, if you can figure out a way to rig one.

hoop house made of chicken wire...will need a way to close up the ends as well. Or a .22 and a crockpot.

I keep lots of water features in my yard. Keeps the squirrels and bluejays from going after my tomatoes for hydration.

Goldfish we have 2koi ponds with a waterfall by the garden so that doesn't bother them they drink out of it.. they have gotten so bold as to steal the tomatoes while I'm in the garden watering it. Squirrel stew really seems to be the answer ..

For now my problem with the tomato thief squirrel has been solved. I feed them on the other side of the property.. I found they must like sunflower seeds and pecans better.

I give mine peanuts. I get a big bag at Costco for $5.55 and they get a handful everyday. Good luck.

you can set foundation blocks(cinder blocks) round the garden, then take 1/2 inch PVC pipe & put both end in the blocks(think hoop house), then cover the whole thing with 1/4 inch hardware fabric(1/4 inch holes ) wiring the seams together so the squirrels & other animals don't pry the seams apart & get in.. ..on one end, wire the fabric to the frame(PVC pipes), and on the other end, make a door so you(& family members) can go in & out of. This will stop even the most determined squirrels(& any other garden thief).

I've had luck with covering individual fruit with the lightweight, poly fabric usually used to protect plantings from frost ... it also allows the tomatoes to ripen slowly on the vine. A lot of people here cover their mangoes with this fabric or paper bags to keep squirrels from getting to them.
