Help! My flower gardens are being overrun with toads! I know they're beneficial for getting rid of insects, but the toxins in their skin are killing my plants! What do I do? :-/

  • What I have read about toads they will not harm plants, but remove bugs and insects. The plants may have other issues that you may not be aware of. If you do have many insects that perhaps are attracting the toads, then it could be the insects that are causing the damage. In addition I have read that toads will bury into the soft and damp soil to protect themselves against drying out. This may also be the reason why your having plant issues. It has nothing to do with the toad being poisonous or not. http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/plant-problems/pests/toad-control.htm May shed additional light on this topic for you.

Agree with Woodbridge Environmental. Toads are beneficial so your dealing with something else. Double check your plants for non-beneficial insect pests. Something is drawing the toads in and it's not the plants.

Do you know what kind of toads they are? I would find that out before doing anything. There are some species out there that are very toxic to small children and pets.

I am completely in agreement with toads not being the guilty party.

make a toad house (upside down flower pot with access to outside) and the damage will be limited. Then ignore them.

One last comment to those who believe toads have no toxins in their skin.... I'm sure ANY dog/animal who has had the misfortune to end up with a toad in their mouth- for whatever reason (and began "frothing" for several minutes) would disagree with you! :-)
  • There is no disagreement about some toads secreting a chemical that can be toxic to pets, but these toxins do nothing to the flowers or plants in the garden which is the topic of this discussion, which was the concern of the poster of this thread.

    • @Darla While I do not doubt your issue about them destroying some of your plants its just that there is nothing anywhere that I can find that says the secretions that the toads produce is the issue that is harming them. What I have read on this and I would like to be proven wrong if you have any written data on the subject as I am always willing to learn something new. What I have read its the burying themselves in the root structure within the plant area it what is doing the damage to the plants. I do not doubt you have experienced issues with them, but I believe its not really the poison that only a few of these types of frogs produce that is causing your issue. Perhaps someone else would like to correct me on this if they can find something that counters what I have researched? In any case this is a interesting topic to say the least.
